Since sugar-free diet sodas are essentially calorie-free/
carbohydrate-free, they will not affect your
blood glucose level. They can be consumed in any moderate amount as part of a plan for
diabetes management. In the Diabetic Exchange System they are considered "free foods." Other "free" drinks include water, flavored/carbohydrate-free water, club soda, unsweetened (or with sugar substitute) coffee and tea, carbonated or mineral water, and diet tonic water. That said, sugar-free sodas should not replace nourishing beverages such as fat-free or low fat milk, or 100 percent juice, in a smart eating plan. Be sure to count beverages as you plan and eat to manage diabetes. Nutrient-rich beverages, such as milk and juice, count toward food group goals.
