Throughout November, the American
Diabetes Association conducts special events across the country to
raise awareness about diabetes and its serious complications such
as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness.
American
Diabetes Month strives to help people understand that the impact
of this disease in our country is staggering: Since 1987 the death
rate from diabetes has increased 45%, while deaths due to heart disease,
stroke, and cancer have actually declined.
Keeping
blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible is the main goal
for people with diabetes, according to 2008 Diabetes Educator of
the Year and Dreamfields Advisory Board Member Tami
A. Ross (RD, LD, CDE).

Tami in our latest cooking video
"Food choices certainly play a significant role,” says
Ross. “The good news is that there are now more high fiber
and low digestible carb food products on the market, such as Dreamfields
Pasta, that can help people with diabetes maintain blood sugar
levels without sacrificing delicious taste."

Type 1 diabetes
The body fails to produce insulin, the hormone that “unlocks” the

Type 2 diabetes
Results from the body's inability to properly use insulin, combined
with insulin deficiency. Some can control type 2 diabetes with diet,
weight loss and exercise. Others take one or more medications, including
insulin.
